What They're Saying About IFMA's World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo in Atlanta

“Our participation in World Workplace allows AT&T to have a one-on-one information exchange with leaders in the facility management community. We’re able to share trends and best practices that we’re seeing from our ecosystem of solutions providers, and facility management professionals, in turn, help us craft a roadmap for solutions that will improve their practice. We rely on the insight of IFMA members — it’s how we’re able to ‘rethink possible.’”
Susan Fitzsimmons, senior market manager, AT&T Business Services

“World Workplace is a great place to share our thinking on topics affecting how and where we all work. More importantly, it gives us the chance to listen to participants and understand more about how these topics affect their workplaces. At Herman Miller, we use that knowledge to design and develop furniture and related services and technologies that contribute to world-class work environments. It’s one way we’re working for a better world around you.”
Wayne Baxter, Thrive Portfolio lead, Herman Miller

“IFMA’s World Workplace is the premier event to network with other facility professionals and discuss their top-of-mind workplace challenges. We look forward to the opportunity to showcase our extensive eco-conscious line of products and services offered through Staples Advantage — including Staples Facility Solutions and Business Interiors by Staples — and further demonstrate the unique advantages of offering the industry’s most extensive business products and services from one source. Today, our mission is to empower facility managers to improve the quality of their workplace environment and meet their sustainability goals, while greatly reducing costs.”
—Jay Mutschler, senior vice president, Staples Advantage

“The World Workplace expo hall is one of the greatest places to hear, and take part in, the facility management dialogue. Exhibiting at World Workplace gives us an incomparable opportunity to be part of that conversation with prospective customers, current customers and other facility professionals. We are excited about the opportunity to contribute to the future of facility management — and the World Workplace expo hall is a great window into that future.”
Roger W. Peterson Jr., regional vice president, ARAMARK

“World Workplace is one of the premier meetings of facility managers, who are facing the daunting task of doing more with less. It’s an excellent forum for presenting them with an alternative procurement vehicle that truly has the possibility of being better, more responsive and more cost effective: job order contracting. KBR is a proven 23-year veteran of providing JOC services, and IFMA’s World Workplace has the credibility to pull these facility professionals together. Their reputation is one of the reasons I pursued FMP® accreditation with them. I wanted facility managers to know I understood their issues and that I took their profession seriously.”
Mike Coberley, FMP, senior business development manager, KBR

“World Workplace is the perfect place for us to spend time with facility managers as we work to collaborate with our customers in our product collections. Customer partnerships are how we do business, and this conference is a great opportunity to hear what’s important to them, what works and what doesn’t, so we can deliver total solutions that perform for every environment.”
Anthony Minite, president, Bentley Prince Street

“World Workplace provides a terrific forum for networking, seminars and planned events that expose attendees to the best practices in the industry. The opportunity to connect with existing and potential clients, and to show them how much we value them and their organizations, is a true benefit to the entire Mohawk Group. We are always seeking the chance to learn more about their needs and challenges, and to make sure our products and services are providing the solutions they’re looking for.”
Paul Cleary, regional vice president, The Mohawk Group

IFMA Debuts Enhanced Facility Management Professional Credential

HOUSTON — (Oct. 6, 2010) — The International Facility Management Association is pleased to announce the rollout of its revamped Facility Management Professional credential. Originally developed in 2004, the FMP® is an assessment-based certificate program, the completion of which demonstrates a proven comprehension of the foundations of facility management. Currently, there are more than 1,800 FMPs throughout the world.

Facility management is a profession encompassing multiple disciplines to ensure the functionality of the built environment. Being proficient in this field requires individuals to have a broad range of knowledge and skills. In 2009, IFMA conducted a global job task analysis to better define the knowledge and skill sets required of facility professionals. An international survey of the industry was taken, asking respondents in 63 countries for the key responsibilities and challenges that defined their profession.

The enhanced FMP credential is the result of this analysis. The designation is now comprised of 11 core competencies, up from the previous nine. The four courses making up the FMP program are also more robust, having been refocused by subject matter expert content providers. The program now includes a course entitled “Finance and Business Essentials” to help facility professionals embrace the business aspect of the profession, better connect with the C-suite and add value to their organizations.

“The development of this credential has been globally comprehensive and focused on quality and pushing the profession forward,” said Catherine Pavick, IFMA’s vice president of education. “The content of the enhanced FMP was driven by the industry itself, as defined by practicing FMs. We’ve designed these courses in a way that will allow us to stay current, relevant and provide updates as needed. Our intent is to be the best and to follow the evolution of the profession.”

The new FMP credential program features comprehensive training available in self-study or instructor-led classroom format. The FMP self-study program is available now, while classroom-based courses will begin in February 2011. Both learning methods feature interactive programming including print and online study tools to provide practical career training and consistent preparation and assessment.

IFMA will formally announce the enhanced FMP credential during a press conference at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, as part of the association’s World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo. The press conference will be open to the public.

A complete list of details about the enhanced FMP credential is available online. To learn more about World Workplace 2010, or to register, visit www.worldworkplace.org. Members of the media may register at no cost.

IFMA Foundation to Award $112,000 in Scholarships at World Workplace in Atlanta

HOUSTON — (Sept. 15, 2010) — Because supporting deserving students helps to ensure the quality of the built environment in a changing world, the IFMA Foundation will present $112,000 in scholarships to 33 facility management students during the World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo, held Oct. 27-29 in Atlanta, Ga.

Ninety-nine graduate and undergraduate students representing 35 schools applied for the scholarships, which are awarded based on merit to students pursuing degrees in facility management or a related field. The scholarships range from $1,500 to $5,000 per student, and the winners also receive a free trip to World Workplace.

“IFMA Foundation scholarships not only address a critical need, but also represent a niche funding source — and in many ways, the only funding source — for interdisciplinary and specialized study within facility management and related fields,” said Shelagh McCartney, doctoral candidate at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a scholarship award winner. “The scholarships enable the best candidates to pursue careers in these desired fields and meet and learn from each other and future employers at World Workplace. This support allows students to concentrate on their studies and relieves concern over funding.”

The scholarships will be awarded on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, as part of the IFMA Foundation Education Reception & Scholarship Presentation, made possible by ARAMARK and FM:Systems. Scholarships are being provided by several IFMA chapters and councils, as well as by companies including Sodexo and Davies Office Refurbishing.

The event will also mark the presentation of the first ever IFMA Foundation International Student of the Year award, which will be presented to Cornell University student Ziqi Wu, who is also a scholarship winner. The reception will be open to anyone who would like to attend.

Since the IFMA Foundation began awarding scholarships to students in 1991, it has provided a total of 310 scholarships worth $854,750. For more information about the IFMA Foundation’s education, research and scholarship initiatives, visit www.ifmafoundation.org.

Sustainability, Executive Management Highlight World Workplace 2010 Educational Sessions

Sustainability, Executive Management Highlight World Workplace 2010 Educational Sessions

HOUSTON — (Sept. 2, 2010) — Heading to Atlanta Oct. 27-29, the World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo will feature more than 75 educational sessions addressing issues relevant to the performance and safety of the workplace. This year’s sessions will cover topics including sustainable initiative incorporation, executive leadership in hard times, energy management, security and more, and will feature presentations from representatives of Coca-Cola, Cornell University, Duke Clinical Research Institute, IBM, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation, among others.

World Workplace 2010 educational sessions will be held Thursday, Oct. 28, and Friday, Oct. 29, in Atlanta’s Georgia World Congress Center. Sessions will follow 12 educational tracks, including traditional tracks such as Benchmarking & Best Practices, Sustainability, and Trends & Innovation, and four new tracks being introduced this year. Conference attendees can earn continuing education units for each session they attend.

With so many organizations responding to environmental concerns and the economic downturn by implementing or enhancing a sustainability program, one of this year’s new tracks will be How-to Guides, developed around the IFMA Foundation’s Sustainability How-to Guide Series. The track will feature eight different sessions, including the introductory session, “IFMA and Sustainability – Past, Present and Future,” presented by Eric Teicholz, IFMA Fellow, president of Graphic Systems and executive editor of the guides.

“The sustainability guide presentations provide practical information on how to implement and measure energy savings in the built environment. Each session covers a different component of energy — such as how to get started, improving efficiency of water usage and lighting, comparing existing rating systems, using energy retro-commissioning, implementing ENERGY STAR® and more,” said Teicholz. “The sessions will present successful case studies, suggest best practices, instruct attendees on how to implement energy initiatives, and teach them how to develop a business case and ROI analysis.”

World Workplace will feature more than a dozen sessions on sustainability. Other sessions will cover topics including demystifying green product standards, retro-greening buildings, energy benchmarking in facility management and sustainability in the public sector.

Because executive leadership matters most in difficult times, this year also marks the debut of IFMA’s Executive Management educational track, featuring sessions designed with the experienced built environment professional in mind. John Baldoni, leadership expert, “Harvard Business Review” columnist and president of Baldoni Consulting, will present “Lead by Example: A Guide to Leadership in Hard Times.” Baldoni will address the challenges all leaders face when trying to rally people around a common cause and will teach attendees how to make the tough choices and create conditions for people to succeed.

This year will also mark the return of the IFMA Council Lunch and Learn educational sessions, which will feature a total of 15 different options. IFMA’s councils are special interest groups organized around the diverse industries and facilities represented by association members. Introduced last year, these sessions are sponsored by councils and take an in-depth look at both industry-specific and overarching facility concerns. Topics will include tips for protecting financial institutions, solutions for restaurant and food service challenges, and how to relate daily green initiatives to all levels of an organization.

Additional World Workplace educational sessions will cover a variety of topics, including adapting facilities for climate change, working with commercial real estate brokers and approaching building security from every angle. A complete list of educational sessions is available online.

World Workplace Expo Offers First Look at 2011 Workplace Products and Services

HOUSTON — (Aug. 10, 2010) — Coming to Atlanta's Georgia World Congress Center Oct. 27-29, the International Facility Management Association's World Workplace 2010 Conference & Expo is a multi-national, multi-disciplined discussion on workplace trends, challenges and best practices that will highlight the new products and services impacting the workplace throughout 2011 and beyond.

In addition to a conference consisting of more than 75 educational sessions and a keynote presentation by the honorable Alexis M. Herman, esteemed workforce expert and former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton, the event will feature an expo with more than 260 exhibitors — including companies such as AlliedBarton, ARAMARK, IBM, KBR, Lowe's, Staples and UGL Unicco — as well as governmental agencies including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of State.

The World Workplace expo will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, and from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28. Wednesday's expo grand opening will be followed by a "meet and greet" with Herman in the expo hall. This year's expo will once again be freely accessible to the public.

One of the annual highlights of the World Workplace expo is the Green Zone, an exclusive section of the expo floor reserved for companies offering environmentally friendly products and services. Nearly 100 exhibitors will be featured in the Green Zone this year, including companies such as AT&T, Bentley Prince Street, CORT, Kimball Office, Philips and Steelcase.

"Our participation in World Workplace allows AT&T to have a one-on-one information exchange with leaders in the facility management community," said Susan Fitzsimmons, senior market manager for AT&T Business Services. "We're able to share trends and best practices that we're seeing from our ecosystem of solutions providers, and facility management professionals, in turn, help us craft a roadmap for solutions that will improve their practice. We rely on the insight of IFMA members — it's how we're able to 'rethink possible.'"

Atlanta-based exhibitors will also be front and center this year, as the World Workplace 2010 expo will, for the first time, highlight exhibitors who call the conference's host city home. Peachtree Street, an area of the floor dedicated exclusively to Atlanta-area exhibitors, will feature nearly two dozen local companies.

"World Workplace provides a unique opportunity to reach our facility management clients and end users in a relaxed but professional environment," said Paul Cleary, regional vice president of Atlanta-based The Mohawk Group. "We're looking forward to connecting with customers from all over the world — right here at home in Atlanta — to show them how much we value them and their organizations and to make sure our products and services are providing the solutions they're looking for."

In addition to showcasing the latest in workplace products and services, this year's World Workplace expo will host popular attractions including Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars and the ServiceMaster Clean Machine and show car. Chrysler's GEM cars are 100 percent electric, street legal vehicles that achieve speeds up to 25 miles per hour and go 30 miles per charge. The ServiceMaster Clean Machine is a 53 foot mobile command center featuring fully functional office and living spaces. It is used to host hospitality events at premier race tracks across the country in conjunction with the company's show car — a 2010 Dodge Charger COT built to professional race car specifications which can travel 200 miles per hour.

Attendees interested in learning more about the latest developments within the association can visit the IFMA Central Booth. IFMA representatives and others will be on hand to discuss the association's revamped Facility Management Professional credential, as well as the upcoming Sustainability Facility Manager credential. Attendees can also learn more about how to enter their facility data into the EPA's ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager as part of IFMA's ENERGY STAR Challenge, which aims to help facility professionals reduce their organization's energy use.

Taking place on the expo floor throughout the afternoons of Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 27-28, will be Solutions Arena educational presentations and product demonstrations from companies including ARCHIBUS, Planon and TRIRIGA. Topics will include finance for real estate executives, maximizing facility performance during challenging times, and sustaining aging infrastructures. Select Solutions Arena presentations will be eligible for continuing education units.

More than 80 exhibitors will be featured in the Green Zone this year, including companies such as AT&T, Bentley Prince Street, CORT, Kimball Office, Kohler and Steelcase.

Complementing the expo will be World Workplace 2010 educational sessions. Organized into 13 different tracks, these sessions offer facility professionals the continuing education courses they need to keep their professional certifications current and meet the challenges posed by today's workplace. Session topics include carbon footprint reduction, energy saving, executive management, high performance building, security, sustainability and more. Representatives from AlliedBarton, Cornell University, Fluor, HOK, IBM and Wal-Mart, among others, will present. World Workplace educational sessions will be held Thursday and Friday, Oct. 28-29.
